New Book From Curzon – Caucasus World

The Caucasus, home to over fifty ethnic groups,  is located between the Black and Caspian seas. Throughout much of history it has been a major conduit of goods, people, and ideas traveling between Europe and Asia. While implying a potential source of benefits, this strategic location has often been detrimental to the inhabitants of the region. The fall of the Soviet Union one the one hand enabled oil companies from around the world to flock to the shores of the Caspian; on the other hand, it was the main reason for the eruption of five armed conflicts that have yet to be settled. The instability caused by these conf-licts has prevented the emergence of democratic societies and impeded economic development; however it has attracted the interest of foreign powers interested either in the region’s strategic location, its natural resources, or both. The Caucasus is set to remain a crucial pillar of Eurasian security in the coming decades. This book aims to explore the conflicts of the Caucasus, the interests guiding the foreign powers involved in the area, as well as the geopolitical game resulting from this involvement.
